David, the 10-k citation sounds like a Requiem for COMS. Check out a contrasting viewpoint on the networkers, "Cowen Survey finds Deceleration in Access Concentrator spending plans; but strong router spending plans". See link below for the article.

exchange2000.com

The article seems to suggest that CSCO may be gaining share of concentrators from COMS. Quoting in part,

Cisco has gained mindshare as an access concentrator vendor, with 14% of total mentions, compared to only 4% in our 11/96 survey. Router spending intentions are strong, up at an annualized rate of 51%, bolstering bullish trends at strong buy-rated Cisco. The rate of spending growth is much higher than suggested recently by industry analysts and Cisco's guidance.

Apparently USRX's X2 modems is one segment of COMS' business that's thriving, but 56k deployment will be mostly complete in early 98, and access concetrators market will slow by mid 98, according to the study. Conversely the market for routers will remain strong, boding well for CSCO and ASND.

Not all networking business is as bleak as COMS says it is.

Regards,

Tulvio
