It is fine to say that there were things that helped Reagan, but that is always true, no leader does it alone, or can be indifferent to circumstance. The main factor altering history was Reagan, however, in his willingness to face down the Soviets over intermediate missiles, in his countering of their adventurism in Afghanistan and Central America, and in his willingness to support dissident movements in the Eastern bloc to an extraordinary degree. SDI had them terrified. But it was also important that he rewarded Gorbachev for good behavior, and showed that there was a way out of the Cold War, if the Soviet Union would become markedly less repressive. Of course, as it happened, weakening repression meant that the Soviet Union would fall apart...........
