Jon - I remember trying to find statistics regarding mental cognition after CABG and other surgeries and never had much luck. I chalked it up to the newness of the field and the fact that there really isn't any way to treat the problem.

As best I can tell from the literature, there have been hints about this since the early 60's!! The problem is that almost all the studies are boutique studies. Small, not well planned out,... . Done to get a paper out with your name on it. Boutique studies (my term) are infamous in the medical field - not worth a lot despite the 'peer review' process. Good studies take a lot of money - generally meaning an advocacy group or a medical company that stands to make a lot of money.

The most common complaint was that the possibility was glossed over which led to quite a shock when the side effects were more severe than anticipated.

Doctors are as rigid in their thinking as any other profession. Perhaps more so. When my mother, an MD herself, was dying of melanoma she got large amounts of factually incorrect advice from the experts - I'd go to the library, get the multiple papers, and still they'd hold to their story. I don't think they are lying so much as hidebound. Very worrisome, but why should they be different from other human beings?

BTW - Inre the TBI trial, I agree. I think that there is a very good chance that they will come in with p<0.01 and combined with ethical arguments and multiple centers, ... . Pharmos appears to have done all the right things to address the problems that cropped up in the Phase II. But there is ALWAYS the chance of a curve ball. I pays my money and ... .
