Kerry got a less than honorable discharge because of his meeting with the North Vietnamese while still an Officer in the U.S. Navy. Lucky for him Carter gave out pardons to anti war protesters in 1978 and thats when Kerry was able to finally get an honorable discharge, many years after he left active duty.
