There is no doubt that the Reagan years was the beginning of huge deficit spending. Carter did not hand over a good economy but he only ran $50 billion deficit. reagan upped that to $300 billion in the first few years, and it has not stopped since. I am old enough to remember it. I am a republican so give me any crap about being a liberal. The tax cuts and Republican economic policy has been a lie. The Republican Party has betrayed it's people. The only ones who support them now are the rich who have participated in the rape of our economy. That's why Bush has to resort to election fraud to get elected.
