Editorial from Times of Zambia

ZAMBIA has come of age.
Yesterday marked the grand finale of Zambia’s 40th independence anniversary celebrations.

The day was the climax of elaborate festivities to commemorate, and befittingly so, Zambia’s peaceful journey of 40 years.

Zambia’s accomplishments in the last 40 years, more particularly in advancing the cause of humanity, deserve accolades.

Unflinching support to the liberation struggle in the sub region, conflict resolution on the continent and uplifting the image of Africa has earned Zambia a plus.

Without doubt Zambians have endured a lot of sacrifice for the well-being of Africans.

As South African President Thabo Mbeki rightly put it yesterday, Zambia should return to the centre stage in advancing Africa’s programmes.

Mbeki’s remarks at State House yesterday could not have come at a more opportune and appropriate time.

Zambians should take Mbeki’s comments seriously for the country to assume its traditional presence on the continent’s centre stage.

Acknowledging that life begins at 40, Zambians should from the start aggressively work to better the country’s economic life and rightfully fulfil their role on the international stage.

Through hard work and resolute contribution to the well-being of the country shall Zambia rise from the perceived economic and other difficulties that have besieged the country.

Opening a new chapter in the coming years, Zambians should endeavour to re-live the dream of the founding fathers on the country.

The founding fathers based their struggle for independence on a prosperous Zambia that could take care of its people. They wanted the people of Zambia to live happily in freedom and peace.

That we have faired well in preserving the freedom and peace means that we can equally make it by clearing our land of hunger and disease.

As sung in the national anthem that “land of work and joy in unity” Zambians should begin to breathe, eat, drink and dream work.

With every Zambian contributing in one way or another, Zambia can turn around its fortunes to become one of the adored countries of the world.

Zambians should begin to live their dream of being in a country devoid of disease and hunger.

The people of Zambia should from now begin to aspire for a better country that they have all along longed for.

Zambia and Zambians have the potential to make the country not only a haven of peace but also a land of plenty.

Successfully and peacefully attaining 40 years means that Zambia is now mature enough to effectively tackle and overcome impediments in its path before a mammoth leap to prosperousness.
