Buddy, The population dynamics are not very good. The most common avian flu sero-type is H9N2 and it is found in migrating birds. Many chickens and ducks in Asia roam free on farms and can interact with the migrating fowl. Most isolates in Hong Kong in 2003 were mixtures (via recombination and/or reassortment) between H9N2 and H5N1. recombinomics.com These viruses do "get around" and they are literally "one flight away", but there are no border checks. The latest aside was the two smuggled (into Belgium) eagles, which actually happened on a commercial passenger flight. The two eagles were H5N1 positive and their exact origin remains under investigation.
