The 911 stuff was an after-thought of the prosecutor speaking before thinking, and went away pretty quickly.

Here is what Elgindy himself wrote:

I declare that I was always under the impression that what I was doing was lawful and good and helpful to the government and for the public good. I considered myself to be an informal informant. Unfortunately this relationship ended the day of my arrest, apparently after the horrific events of September 11, Certain government officials werer swayed in New York and Washington DC to begin looking at me because of my Arabic heritage... So, clearly Elgindy thinks his heritage was the main reason why he was initially targeted. There is also no denying that the 9-11 connection was front and center in the FBI press release and subsequent articles detailing his arrest. The fact such a connection was obviously discredited doesn't imply it was an afterthought... unless you equate overzealousness to an afterthought, which I consider a stretch but not necessarily proof to the contrary.
