NZ may seem deader partly because it's a whole lot smaller, not to mention stuck not so far from Antarctica.

I've had a lot of dealings with both countries, and I have family and friends in Wellington and Sydney. True, Australia is much bigger and more dynamic, but NZ has a lot going for it. For one thing, a very efficient government - zero corporate subsidies, zero trade subsidies, total transparency wrt international trade and taxation. Ranks right up there with Singapore on those charts. That has made its economy extremely competitive. For instance, in NZ (unlike in the EU or US!) there are no farming supports, which makes this sector one of the most efficient in the world.

As for talent leaving NZ. Yes, true in the past, but in recent years the immigration pattern has reversed. Tech and media firms are starting up everywhere. The NZD is reflecting this new prosperity.
