Authorities began looking into the activities of Anthony Elgindy, an Egyptian-born investor who was among those indicted, as part of the wide-ranging net cast by investigators looking for potential financiers of Muslim groups with links to terrorism last fall, according to a Federal Bureau of Investigation official.

Thanks for finding that... the article I recall reading that clearly states the FBI connection was found only after Elgindy was investigated for possible 9-11 ties.

Like I said, if you pull someone over for a broken tail light and find they have a stash of drugs in the trunk, it doesn't make the resulting drug arrest any less compelling. However, if you pulled said car over because of racial profiling, that could potentially cause problems in court.

I disagree that the government threw up the racial charges to see if they would stick. I think Elgindy's activist brother made investigators very suspicious of Tony-- and you really can't blame them given the post 9-11 climate. However, unless you possess something close to a smoking gun, I do take issue at even raising the possibility someone might be complicit with terrorism, let alone accusing them of such.

Anyhow, putting the racial stuff aside, I think we're all in agreement that being given access to a classified FBI database (regardless of whether the data you receive is itself considered classified) is a big no-no.
