AMES can not afford to spend money fast, only to invest in merchandise using 3-4 month trade credit. The way stores volume is gaged is the square footage that they hold. Caldor and Bradlee all have twice the footage and have twice the sales volume.

Obviously, AMES has to pack more merchandise into their stores. Where they do not have square footage; they have vertical space. Their (more valuable merchandises) bicycles are stored hung close to the ceiling. But they need more help to sell bicycles just to move them down for trial or for examination closer. But limited upscaling will also move more valuable merchandises into the store; therefore increase sales revenue. It will take some time to get comfortable for AMES purchasing to look at how much merchandise value they can pack into each store and still serve their present customers as well as more upscale customers.

This plan is more adaptable than more new stores until they have a new and successful purchasing plan. Currently they have increased from 300 vendors to 1200 vendors. AMES may need more vendors yet.
