Al-Zarqawi ally killed in air strike, say US
TELEGRAPH UK

An ally of militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has been killed in an overnight air raid on Fallujah, the US says.

A statement said the "precision strike" in northwest Fallujah had hit a safe house used by the Jordanian militant's al Qaeda-linked network, adding that a known associate of Zarqawi was present at the time.

Residents said the raid had destroyed one house and damaged another three. Hospital staff said they had received no casualties.

Zarqawi's group claimed responsibility for the weekend slaughter of 49 army recruits and three civilian drivers.

Interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi has ordered investigators to find out whether the attackers had inside information on the movements of the victims and why they had no weapons or armed escort, a source close to Mr Allawi said.

The raid came as it emerged nearly 380 tons of explosives have gone missing from a site near Baghdad which was part of Saddam Hussein's dismantled nuclear programme but never secured by US forces.

The United Nation's nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, said the missing explosives could be used to detonate a nuclear weapon or as conventional arms.
