iPod Photo, doesn't rock?

Tuesday, 26 October 2004  18:50 GMT

Apple has announced the iPod Photo, essentially the same as the latest edition of the iPod but with a 2.0" 116,000 pixel 65K color LCD monitor and the software capability to display images as well as play music. The iPod Photo can also be attached to a TV for on-screen display via a special cable or the new dock. The iPod Photo will be available in 40 and 60 GB capacities, the biggest nonsense? No built-in Card slot! iTunes is be used to sync photos but appears to downsample them for display on the iPod Photo.

Phil: It looks as though the iPod Photo will be compatible with optional card reader accessories like the Belkin Media Reader however I think Apple just missed the killer-app by leaving this out of the basic design. It's also fairly clear that the iPod Photo won't have the horsepower to display high megapixel images particularly quickly, hence why iTune's default is to transfer downsized images for playback on the iPod Photo. Also the AV dock should have come with a remote control. Despite all this I'm sure it'll sell by the millions.
