Great story! I've been down in that area. They have a "Bear Crossing" sign on the highways and people still hit the poor critters. Not too much excuse for it, in my opinion. In all my years in the woods, I've never seen a bear trying to cross a road at night, or in some situation where you couldn't be expected to see him if you were driving defensively.

I hit a deer one time in the middle of the night in a rainstorm in an area of Montana that is loaded with deer. That's the only time I've even had a close call.
