Silicon Laboratories Inc.'s stock plunged Monday night after the company warned for the second consecutive quarter that a backlog in semiconductor inventories would drastically crimp sales, at least through the rest of 2004.

The Austin-based chip company estimated sales in the fourth quarter would be between $93 million and $97 million, well below the $125 million average analyst estimate, according to Thomson First Call. The bleaker outlook brought a beating for the company's shares, which dropped 21 percent to $27.20 in after-hours trading, the stock's lowest value since February 2002.
