Saudi will prevail against what they refer to as the "deviants". I would say that the rumours or speculation of some "Observers" of the demise of the current rulers is most likely premature. However, there are many pressures on this country. The largest is their population growth and the lack of an infrastructure to provide employment for all. They are just starting to tackle that.

The news you receive on Saudi is for the most part distorted. Most of the people here are very nice. Their customs are very different from ours, but you will have to go far to find a more hospitable group of people. Saying that, it is hard to get past the surface and develop deeper friendships as they tend to limit the intimacies to close family and tribe.

I am Christian, so have no interest in entering a mosque. My Arabic is elementary at best. My daughter though is learning the language and can read it.

" my question to you is this: How can a society with religious beliefs like Saudis ever make in-roads in destroying Al Qaeda? It would be like saying American government could wage a successful war against freedom of speech. In pressuring the Saudi government into taking arms against AQ, are we not in fact speeding up their demise?

My take on this is no. Most of the people here just want to live a normal life and do not want the terror going on. Most of the people actually like America although many are not enamored with our government mainly because they have issues with our perceived unbalanced approach to the Israel/Palestinian problem. Saudi is starting to change, from education, to upcoming municipal elections, to moderating religous teachings. No I do not think that the Saudi govt. is speeding their demise by taking on AQ. They are actually stabilizing their rule, because AQ preys on weakness. They are being decimated weekly here as in other parts of the world.

Regards

Neil
