Bush was joined by Democratic Sen. Zell Miller of Georgia, who delivered a blistering attack on his party at the Republican National Convention. (Miller: Democrats' thinking is 'warped')

"He's joined by millions of other Democrats across the country who are supporting our ticket," the president said.

"I want to speak directly to the Democrats. I'm a proud Republican, but I believe my polices appeal to many Democrats," Bush said. "In fact, my opponent is running away from some of the great traditions of the Democratic Party.

"If you're a Democrat and you want our country to be strong and confident in our ideals I'd be honored to have your vote."

Bush also touched on moral issues including moves to ban same-sex marriage and a late-term abortion procedure opponents call "partial birth abortion"

"If you think marriage should be protected from activist judges, I'd be honored to have your vote," he said.

"The senator of Massachusetts is outside the mainstream of America and outside the mainstream of the Democratic Party," Bush charged. "I hope people who usually vote for the other party will take a close look at my agenda."
