UPDATE 1-Chile Sept copper output up 13.6 percent Wed Oct 27, 2004 10:41 AM ET
SANTIAGO, Chile, Oct 27 (Reuters) - Copper production in Chile, the world's top producer of the metal, rose 13.6 percent in September compared with the same month last year, the government's National Statistics Institute said on Wednesday.
September output was 449,410 tonnes, the institute said.
Mining companies in the South American nation have expanded copper output this year due to strong demand from China and elsewhere.
In the first nine months of 2004 Chile produced 3,911,294 tonnes of copper, up 8.2 percent over the same period last year.
Mines posting the greatest growth included those of state-owned mining giant Codelco's mines. Others were BHP Billiton's (BLT.L: Quote, Profile, Research) (BHP.AX: Quote, Profile, Research) Escondida; Collahausi, jointly held by Canada's Falconbridge (FL.TO: Quote, Profile, Research) and South Africa's Anglo-American (AAL.L: Quote, Profile, Research) ; Los Pelambres, owned by Antofagasta Plc (ANTO.L: Quote, Profile, Research) ; and Sur Andes.
These mines collectively accounted for 77 percent of Chile's September copper production.
