According to Sarah Hofstetter, Senior VP Corporate Communications of Net2Phone, VoIP service companies need to have at least two of three different factors for success: 1) A good brand, 2) A good bundle, and/or 3) Access to the last mile. “Cable companies have two of the three,” said Hofstetter, with broadband internet access and the ability to bundle voice services with TV and internet services. She puts Net2Phone into the wholesale VoIP market, setting up smaller cable companies as resellers using Net2Phone service. The company has teamed with Motorola and Cedar Point to offer a comprehensive solution for the cable market.
Hofstetter expressed a preference for Adelphia Communications, currently in bankruptcy proceedings, to be broken up into many smaller pieces rather than to be acquired by one or two cable companies. Larger cable companies will build their own VoIP infrastructure while smaller companies would end up working with Net2Phone rather than getting into the phone business on their own.
Net2Phone has also entered into the Wi-Fi VoIP arena by offering a Wi-Fi handset for enterprise use, but Hofstetter said there were plenty of issues to be worked out. Net2Phone has solved Wi-Fi/VoIP authorization problem but there were still many issues to be worked out, including device battery life and switching between Wi-Fi access points on the fly. |
