Revenue from the life and laboratory sciences division was boosted by new products, soaring 27 percent to $383 million while measurement and control sales jumped 9 percent to $159 million on the back of strong demand from customers in the materials industry.

"We've made significant internal investments to develop new products, expand our services and create the commercial framework necessary to differentiate Thermo in the marketplace," said CEO Marijn Dekkers. "We also have the resources to continue to make strategic acquisitions that extend our offerings and market coverage.

For the fourth quarter, Thermo Electron pegged earnings in a range of 36 cents to 38 cents a share. Analysts previously forecast a profit of 38 cents a share.
