Those consumers need to learn a few American ways and become practical and value conscious. Some of those mooncakes were sold in huge nice looking boxes that are 3 to 4 times bigger than the cakes themselves. I asked my cousin why such huge fancy boxes? He told me that it's Japanese style of gift giving. When I bought one, I felt good carrying the fancy and cool looking box around. When I opened it and start eating the cake, I realized that I cannot eat the box and there is so much empty space in that box. Heck!, there were only five to six cakes in a box that can be filled with at least a dozen of those delicious mooncakes. So I think those rich folks in Shanghai have to learn value and not waste. Maybe just the rich folks are doing it. Maybe if the economy take a stumble, it will teach the newly rich folks not be so wasteful. In the US, those mooncakes would be placed in a plain boxes.

China definitely needs to improve the quality of the household appliances. The stores have a good display of Sanyo and Hitachi appliances (vacuum cleaners) which are considered more reliable and of higher quality. The shoppers do prefer them versus the domestic made ones. Even the window shoppers were looking and touching the Sanyos and Hitachis rather than the domestic brand. However the fans, air conditioners and rice cookers are domestic brands. Haier has become a trusted brand for washers and dryers. It used to be the Hitachis.
