This whole Afghan liberation was "Kim" to me. We finally won "The Great Game." And "Kamal is out with twenty men to raise the border side," kept going though my head.

The early "Richard Sharpe" novels are excellent on India during the Raj, as is my favorite historical character, "Flashy," in "Flashman: From the Flashman Papers." This one has him in Afghanistan as a British officer in 1840.
