Here's a possible reason:

One really nice thing Java has going for it is Javasoft. It is being very smart about seeding the market -- by making it easy for developers to become fluent in Java. They're giving away the JDK, as well as numerous useful resources (reference manuals, tutorials, support, memberships in discussion groups). So you really don't have to pay $0.01 to become a Java expert...so why should you? I'm surprised at the number of Java books out there!
