TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) -- Count Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts among those Boston baseball fans who have waited a lifetime to see the Red Sox win the World Series.
Kerry, wearing a Red Sox cap on the way to a morning rally in Toledo, told reporters Thursday, ``I woke up this morning ... is it really true, it's so great.''
Recalling that a caller to a radio show early in the campaign had said, ``John Kerry won't be president until the Red Sox win the World Series,'' Kerry told supporters at the rally, ``Well, we're on our way!''
The Red Sox defeated the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night, completing a four-game sweep to win their first World Series title since 1918.
``I've been rooting for this day since I was a kid,'' the Democratic presidential candidate said in a statement issued by his campaign. ``I couldn't be more thrilled for the team and for all the fans who stuck by the Red Sox year after year after year. This Red Sox team came back against all odds and showed America what heart is. In 2004, the Red Sox are America's team.'' |
