Study finds imbalance in candidate coverage

News coverage of President Bush during the two weeks that included the presidential debates was 59% negative, and 25% of the stories about Sen. John Kerry were negative, according to a study out today. The study was done by Columbia University's Project for Excellence in Journalism from Oct. 1 to Oct. 14.

The tone of coverage of Bush this year was close to what Democratic nominee Al Gore received in 2000. What's different this year, project director Tom Rosenstiel said, is that Kerry got more positive coverage than Bush did in 2000.

“There may be more things going on here than liberal bias,” Rosenstiel said. “Did Kerry smash Bush this year in the debates more than Bush smashed Gore in 2000? Does the press like to see a race tighten because it makes for a better story?”

The project studied 817 stories from four newspapers, seven TV network news programs and two cable news shows. — Mark Memmott
