There was massive registration of indians by Democrat operatives in 2002. John Thune lost to Time Johnson by a very thin margin. Tom Daschle was intimately involved in the "registration" drive and the subsequent "absentee ballot" drive on the reservations. There were credible charges of Democrat operatives picking up blank ballots, and manipulating elderly "voters".

This is how I remember it. There are obviously more facts, and the other side probably has a version that sounds less ominous.
