The matador was taken to hospital severely injured. He did survive, more or less, with permanent scars and damage. I suspect he regretted his efforts with that particular bull.

The bull no doubt was killed, but the matador wasn't the one who completed the process. He was a casualty of the process. The bull wasn't the news - the matador's loss was.
