They have said all along -- and Rumsfeld repeated over and over during the Afghanistan war -- that the first reports frequently are wrong. Information comes in slowly from a lot of sources, and sometimes its relevance isn't even known until later when an issue arises. Geez, this happened A YEAR AND A HALF AGO, AND THE IAEA ITSELF JUST REPORTED IT!!!!!! RIGHT??????
Have you ever heard the term, "fog of war"? Soldiers are fighting and trying to kill the enemy before they're killed. They aren't taking notes of every observation and action while bullets are flying and shells exploding. It's not a Hollywood set with a script, takes, and re-takes.
They're investigating, and today they emphasized that they've put a lot of resources over the past few days to account for this 1/1000 of Saddam's known materials that were captured, held, and destroyed.
The very Major who held the conference is back in the States, and only heard about the issue on the news, and at first thought they were talking about material that only recently disappeared, not material that he was involved with A YEAR AND A HALF AGO!
Back in the '70's, I worked on Capitol Hill and did a research project at the Library of Congress involving Navy records from some WWII actions. During the course of it, I opened reams of bound materials of battles from the 1940's, whose dried out pages cracked in my hands from age, never having been looked at since they were filed in the '40's.
