The results are indeed better than was expected and would have been even better had the company not invested so heavily in R & D. This sort of investment is money well spent particularly at a time when the company's fortunes are improving. It could set the stage for explosive results over the next 12 months.

In last year's 1st Q the company spent $1.925 million on R & D compared to this year's expenditure of $3.149 million. If spending for R & D had been on a equal basis to last year's 1st quarter the company would have earned $0.27/share compared to last year's $0.23.
