I think the bulls are running out of money and there may also be some defectors from the ranks of the bulls. Sure there's some rotation into small caps and this dying bull may still have some fight left but I also think that part of what got us above 8000 was people who didn't wan't to sell before the capital gains tax cut was passed causing a temporary reduction in sellers. Without the sellers holding back it's a lot harder to make new highs. You are right that the number of bulls and the amount of money thay have to throw at the market is what determines the market direction but I don't see their number increasing, a few weeks of directionless whipsaw activity will turn a lot of those bulls into chickens.
