>>There is hardly any waste consumption there.<<

When you go to China, haven't you noticed that plenty of Chinese, when they go to restaurants, they ordered a lot, but seldom take doggy bags. Often times a lot of foods are thrown out. Unlike Americans who take all what left home<g>

Lights in China-- too bad, when you visited Shanghai, the neon lights already been ordered off because of the energy crisis. Otherwise, some of the streets in Shanghai were lighted like Las Vegas<g>. And Shanghai is not the only city that does that. I have seen plenty pictures of night lights in a lot of Chinese cities, and it was not during any festivals.

And you also mentioned about the those luxury moon cake boxes. How much of waste is there? since there were 400-500 million city dwellers consumed mooncakes.

Even in big cities, there is no recycle program yet, so a lot of aluminum cans and glass bottles are thrown away (although some of them are being picked up by poor people). I read that one aluminum cans equals to 100 W of electricity burning one hour?

So in my opinion, China now does have a lot of waste. especially when considering its big population base, even if we just talk about the people in cities.

Airconditioners -- the Beijing airport still had lower temp. than Japan. Japanese airport controlled the temp. at closed to 80 F., very hot<g>

Although you are right in many individuals are frugal about electricity and water use at home.
