I was musing this morning about men who support Kerry.
I find it really difficult to understand. Most men I respect have attributes that would not include angling for a PH over the male equivalent of a broken fingernail. (Now, I hasten to add that I've suffered a broken nail or two in my life, oft at inopportune moments; however, I've managed to trudge forward uttering a curse word or two beneath my breath, and did so without involving others in my petty mishap.)
Despite being a female looking in on male group behavior, I think I have a pretty good idea of how the group dynamic works.
Men are usually harder on other men than are women. (We women can, of course, be more than equally hard on each other.) From a young age, cowardly behavior was usually a cause for derision among men, as was less than optimal sports or PE performance. As a group, I've often found that men are less yielding in their concepts of honor than are women, the latter sometimes being prone to more of a sliding scale.
Perhaps the single most striking attribute of male group behavior is loyalty.
So, please tell me, how is it that there are so many men supporting Kerry?
What attribute(s) does he have that outweigh his shameless pursuit of PH's? How can men get by Kerry's anti-war behavior and testimony before the Senate wherein he turned his back on his "band of brothers" after having physically abandoned them? How do they square his communion with the enemy during the Paris Peace talks with his claim of loyalty to country as an underpinning of his bid for the presidency? How can they select a CIC who does not respect the troops? Who believes that the UN should have the final say over our own military? And who is unwilling to defend this country unless he gets the green light from France and the UN?
At bottom, Kerry doesn't have a single attribute of a strong man to whom we can look up....at least I can't.
<edit: And please don't tell me they're girlie men because that's an insult to women!!> |
