I think it differs from person to person whether they ignore
or ban others.

I avoided the ignore feature for the longest time. As my
activity on SI grew & certain posters became more radical, I
chose to use it as a time saving filter. Why waste time
listening to folks who have become unhinged & they won't even
bother to discuss issues? When you try to discuss differences
of opinion & they completely ignore what you say & just spew
the same old rhetoric & lies ad nauseam. What's the point of
wading through that crap day after day? When they reply to
your POV with the same old rhetoric or personal attacks,
what's the point?

At some point it's obvious you are wasting your time. I chose
to begin ignoring folks like that who relentlessly posted in
that manner on threads I followed just to save time. That way
I got to cover more ground in less time.

This isn't to say I shut out POV's that differ from mine. I
shut out obviously closed minds like AS that waste bandwidth.

I have my own thread on SI. It was created for a specific
purpose & the thread header clearly set the guidelines. I
have no problems if folks want to post there. I just ask that
they observe thread standards. I did not want to wade through
countless posts that were not on topic day after day. Some
folks simply do not care about community standards, so I
temporarily ban when they refuse to stay on topic.

Only one person is on permanent ban because he is so unhinged
that it became his sole purpose to constantly disrupt. And I
currently have no one on ignore, as I remove folks from
ignore after a spell to see if they have changed.

I don't think that makes me a bad person or closed minded.
It's time a management tool that's employed after certain
folks clearly establish they deserve to be ignored.
