there was a nearly universal assumption that Iraq was a substantial threat to Western security, the argument being between those supporting containment and those supporting overthrow.

Many of these assumptions were built upon cherry-picked intelligence data that supported only the conclusion which the Administration wanted to promote.

Sure, the admin had its Lincoln-esque moment, and fooled near all of the people, for a period of time.

Nothing to be proud of.

But the issue was not success, but motive, and there is nothing to indicate that the neocons were not motivated by an honest desire to overthrow a brutal dictatorship and supplant it with a moderate, democratic regime.

Now this is truly laughable. No motive? Hardly. Just for starters...

- juxtaposition to other regimes
- oil reserves
- juxtaposition to other regimes with oil reserves

The tangible asset value is worth hundreds of billions over time, not to mention the intangible future value as a strategic location for US military bases.

Those pesky Turks and Saudis and other such countries - why trust them for bases when the new "Shaw of Iraq" can be put in place to pave the way for base leases.

No motive? That assertion is an insult to the intelligence of everyone here.
