One can easily argue that the Bush administration is guilty of some fascist-like offenses.

- system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator: the power of the President and "defence" currently works very much like a dictatorship. Don't like the intel you are being given? Order up a special Office of Special Plans and instruct them to only promote theories that support a desire to invade Iraq.

- stringent socioeconomic controls: real conservatives lament the plundering of the public purse, particularly when the looting is to support an unjustified war. This war is paid for by current and future taxpayers -- we didn't get to review flawed intelligence nor were we told the "real" reasons for the war.

- suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship: The entire election campaign has, disgustingly, played upon public fear of terrorism. Both camps are at fault, but the current flavor of Republican National Committee campaign chairs are the worst. Cheney is bold enough to tell Soccer Moms that their kids are at increased risk of a Beslan-like massacre if Kerry is elected.

- typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism: invading a country in the middle east to ensure that America can continue to access oil, at whatever the cost, could easily be defined as belligerence. That the region is populated by cultures which are quite distinct to ours certainly creates a strong impression of racist attack, within those cultures, and perception is a real problem.

- Oppressive, dictatorial control: Even some conservatives have serious problems with the Patriot act. Being led to war - ordering the young of the country to fight a battle for the wrong reasons - is pretty much on par with dictatorial regimes.

You should be careful with labels, they have a habit of sticking.
