Maybe I know more addicts than you do. At one time everyone I came in contact with on a daily basis was an addict. The ones that aren't dead from their addictions got clean. Or put another way, those who didn't clean up are now dead or dying. I realize everyone dies but what is the manner of your death?

My mother suffered through 30 years of health issues related to her smoking. She lived in total denial right to the end, never admitting that the various strokes, heart attacks and finally lung cancer had anything to do with her two pack a day habit. In the end everything she cared about was taken away from her. Unable to talk or read (her favorite thing was to curl up with a book) breathing on a vent, the last five years of her 30 year ordeal being the worst, in and out of hospitals with numerous surgeries. It was the slowest suicide of all.

I myself don't smoke and don't do drugs

I find it is always those who have never been addicted, never used who have the most sympathy for addicts and it is the reason that the people around addicts suffer even more than the addict themselves.

an extremely complex phenomenon where genetics, thus biological response, plus availability, plus peer pressure, plus life stresses, plus culture, all come into play.

This sentence will get a big round of laughter from the regular Saturday night 12 step meeting. You'd have them rolling in the aisles.
