I don't know what they tell you at Al-Anon meetings because I've never been to one. I can imagine that people who had to grow up with an alcoholic parent or a set of them can find little to laugh about when it comes to addiction, since it is the people around an addict who suffer the most.

Addicts who have spent a long time clean and sober aren't burdened with an overwhelming sense of tragedy, they're just so glad to be alive, like someone who is a cancer survivor. It is comical when you run into people who have zero personal experience with addiction yet they want to tell you what causes it. Who cares, it's useless information to the addict. It's worse than useless because it gives people a scientific reason to keep killing themselves, that they don't have the power to stop even when they are confronted with a room full of people who are living proof that they can quit.
