Lizzie, How are you voting on the Calif proposition that would let people vote in the other party's primary?

Initially I was for the idea - people should have the right to select who they think is the candidate, but later on I realized this could enable systemic manipulations by the opposite party (e.g. if there's a clear leader in the Republican primary, Republicans might feel free to cross the fence to vote for the 2nd place person in the Democrat primary just to mess up the process by bumping the 1st Democrat out, so a Rep competes only with the second best Dem rather than with the best Dem, giving the Republicans an increased chance to win through these manipulations. And this would be true too for the Dem party.

On the other hand, the proposed process would allow more moderate candidates to bubble to the top, rather than extremists. For example, I doubt Arnold would be selected by his Republican party since he's moderate. If the process doesn't change there's a chance a religious fanatic could take over the Republican party in CA, which would be bad for all of us.

The tradeoff appears to be:

Increase likelihood of moderate politicians bubbling to the top vs increase chance of manipulations with the system by cross party voting.

Regards,
Amy J
