That's not much of a reply, Michael.

A bit too conclusory, in my view.

Potkettleitis, as my wife would say.

Podhoretz's historical analysis is in my estimation quite accurate.

We have had a long history of ignoring and mollycoddling, even, Islamist terrorism, a sorry history that began with Carter. Podhoretz's article clearly shows how this has lead to the unfortunate perception that we are a paper tiger.

It is a perception Bush is attempting to change because, for better or worse, the conduct of a foreign policy is ultimately the management of perceptions. If our responses had matched the aggression we had previously sustained, I doubt that 9/11 would have occurred.

The ultimate problem is not one on which blame can be assigned though the more partisan routinely do so. The problem is that democracies are routinely slow to recognize and react to existential threats, a good thing, though a costly one.

You are simply one of these "late adopters." You'll be in my camp in a couple of years or so.
