If they had only excluded really minor crimes like stealing a pizza or a pack of gum from a convenience store etc., then I could have voted for it.

Yes I think that's the problem with the 3 strikes proposition. There's not much doubt that 3 strikes has achieved its main aim... the career criminals, the one-person crime waves, are mostly locked up now, and serious crime rates are down dramatically. Even if the repeat crimes are burglaries, I think many people are happier with the serial burglars locked away.
