Oh, it's perfectly serious research and it may end up in with a wonder cure for addiction. It just isn't useful to those trying to quit right now. It is counter productive.

And it does not give people a "scientific reason to kill themselves"--what a bizarre unkempt thought.

It's not an "unkept thought". It is an observation based on years of collective experience in what works and what doesn't work to get addicts to give up their compulsive behavior. People have to take responsibility for their own behavior. It is nice to think that people aren't responsible for their behavior and that they can't change it without another drug to counter a genetic or behavioral disposition but this would invalidate the experience of millions of former addicts who have quit. I have a great deal more faith in the strength of the human spirit, that people can work beyond their genetic dispositions and the various environmental factors they are exposed to, than I do in wonder drugs.

For instance, I think antidepressants are overprescribed in general, but there are some lives that they have saved.

A quick poll of the various women friends, family members and clients I have, produces a 3 out of 5 ratio on these antidepressants I'd have to agree they are widely over subscribed. I think that the current use of the new antidepressants will turn out like most of the various miracle fixes that have been bestowed on us by the AMA/drug companies, that, in the future, they will be widely discredited and eventually deemed a dangerous experiment.
