Thanks for the comments Richard. I've grown to mistrust the proposition process in California. Many of these propositions are complex and have language that hides an underlying intent. So while I can agree in general with the direction that Prop 62 supposes, I worry that it can have unintended consequences that I'm ill prepared to understand. I also would prefer to see the major offices excluded. I don't believe it can be fairly applied at the upper levels of government.

There are certainly problems with the two party system but there are advantages too. For example, having two major parties provides a barrier to entry for those who do not hold mainstream views. To be in the political mainstream requires that you prove yourself to have views that are in-line with a large portion of the electorate (right or wrong). I'm afraid if you reduce this barrier you might have rogue candidates like tree-huggers, porn stars and Berkeley drop-out, pot-heads who can take over certain key districts. California is the land of fruits and nuts so if you leave the door open too wide you'll be very sorry.

In my view, the law of unintended consequences must be thoroughly scrutinized before voting on these things. Unless there are adequate safeguards, one should assume there will be unintended consequences especially when these props are being pushed by special interests who are intent on stoking their own agenda.
