Robert; In the 80's prior to windows they were entirely different, and not equivalent. However the first Dostels were far cheaper than Apples of the day. Apple has responded by a generally lower price, but is still a premium priced product even compared to first tier Wintels. At the bottom even the cheapest Apple clones are a lot more than screwdriver shop generic Wintels, with same hard drive, monitor etc.
The equivalence idea is far more valid nowadays, as there are just as many PC strongholds as Mac ones. So it more or less boils down to the task and the price and the buyers personal preference. There are few areas where a MAC or PC it a must buy, usually unique software situations. The only caveat I would make to that is the written base of Wintel Apps is so large that the buyer with no prehistory of using Mac/PC might go with the visible App base as well as price. Never having worked on either machine, he would assess it by simple quantifiables like Price, Warranty, available programs and their costs, etc.
