It does indeed seem to be about more than just the political implications. Certainly your theory holds water, especially with the culture of fear taking hold down there contributing to this foul social mood.

But this election seems to be about which philosophical direction Americans want to take their country going forward. I am talking mainly about foreign policy, the global community and America's place therein. Yes there are domestic and moral issues here too, but the focus most definitely has been elsewhere during the campaign. I am not sure whether Kerry will actually change that direction in any significant manner, and IMO anyone who says they know is really just guessing. But there is a perception that he represents a major swing the other way

Whether one agrees with the direction that Bush has taken the US or not, it is most certainly one which provokes divisiveness. This campaign has been a huge breeding ground for Americans to express, often emotionally their passion about their direction of preference for the country.

As you suggested, the tangible political implications of the election don't mean nearly as much as what this vote seems to have come to represent to the American people and their vision for where America's priorities should lie. And since that vision seems to be so evenly split, one can expect this polarization to continue unless Kerry or Bush can pull a "Reagan" and unite the majority. It seems unlikely.
