Bush isn't a conservative. Bush is a radical. I still hold that it's not the parties or the candidates, it's the grassroots media propaganda over a long period of times.

The progressives came to the party really, really late. Heck, Air America just started up this spring.

At any rate, the Republican party itself is headed for a split. The right-wing whackos are even going after moderate Republicans like Specter.
