I think the ability of the Bush Administration to govern too far to the right will be restricted by the more moderate conservatives. It was refreshing that the moderates in the Senate were openly critical of some of the Bush Administration actions during the middle days of the election.

It was also surprising to see the number of conservative writers that openly rebelled and refused to support the ticket or did so with strong reservations. I suspect that any more of their edge-of-the-cliff adventures will meet stronger resistance from within the party.

I don't think Rove will be able to "play" with this group. They're too aware of the insider moves and how the game has been played. Many of them understand that the radicalism of the Bush Administration contains the seeds of their eventual loss of support. I think they won't be too timid to distance themselves from Bush. That's one thing the strong fight put up by Kerry did; i.e., give a voice to the fault lines in the Bush policies and break the ice on overt criticism of the Bush terrorism and Iraq policies.

Good night. Ed
