IMHO, Kerry ran a decent campaign, but it was much better in the end.

However, I think two things really hurt him. First, picking Edwards as the running mate hurt him. Edwards brought very little to the ticket.

Second, and more importantly, the Democrats ran a very weak Democratic Convention. I watched most of it, and the messages were just not very strong. This was verified through the total lack of bounce in the polls after the Convention. This lack of bounce put Kerry in a real deficit situation that hurt his chances.
