Michael,
LOL. Like there aren't any guntoting Democrats!
The morality thing played big all last night in polling results and was reported as the number one differential.
I think if you asked 100 voters which party/culture was in favor of/in favor of strong rights for:
gay marriage reality tv casual sex on tv MTV VH1 Vulgar talk radio the porn industry no limits on abortion rights the U.N., no matter what the scandals
Then you would get an overwhelming answer. If you asked the same 100 voters which party was in favor of:
strong moral values family oriented tv strong censorship on lascivious behavior/talk on airwaves limiting abortion rights ignoring the U.N. except when we decided not to
Then you would get another answer.
People in the heartland are worried about morality, even if Democrats think it's a silly issue for airheads. If the Dems want to win national elections, they will need to be in touch with more Americans in the red states.
Put another way, if Bush hadn't been such an easy target for the McAulliffe crowd (his speech, his family, the 2000 election, the war), then this would have been a landslide of Reaganesque proportions.
[Edit: gay marriage ban is voted, in various wording, in every single state where it was floated--this goes directly to this topic, I think.]
