Perhaps we are seeing a re-emergence of deep north-south divisions which have been papered over since the civil war. The alliance of northern centrists and liberals, and southern bible-belters who are against the party that freed the slaves, seems to finally be over. And we are back to two different countries which have little in common.

I had been viewing the polarization as basically economic, because of the impending decline in our living standards as our demographics get older. The early stages of a fight over whether the rich or the poor take the hit for that. But seeing the large importance of social issues in the exit polls, I now think that perhaps we are seeing those much-older themes come back.
