Czech President welcomes Bush win

Prague, Czech Republic, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Czech President Vaclav Klaus welcomed George W. Bush's presidential election victory Wednesday, calling him a standard bearer of American values.

Klaus, a rightwinger, said Bush symbolized "the best traditions of America," stressing his appreciation of the newly re-elected American president's commitment to personal liberty and conservative values.

His words of praise were echoed by Foreign Minister Cyril Svoboda.

The Czech news agency CTK quoted Svoboda as saying: "A majority of Americans gave their vote to George Bush in key matters, such as the war on terrorism or the war in Iraq. This has been the line of Czech diplomacy as well."

The Czech Republic joined the European Union May 1, 2004. The country, along with seven others that joined the European Union from former communist central Europe, signed letters of support for U.S. policy towards Iraq just before the invasion took place.
